The Windup Music Box Movement

keyboard for the 18-note windup music box movements

(1) The tune is produced by the keyboard, which is stamped out in a special quality steel, then split in order to obtain l8 strips. The strips are then electronically tuned to vibrate on the right notes. Moreover, feathers (a) are glued by hand on the basses to control the vibrations and ensure the purity of the notes.

(2) The 35 components of the windup music box movement are set on the plate (base) by 6 nickel-plated screws. Made of a special alloy, the plate is brushed, then gold-plated*. At Gueissaz-Jaccard’s, its more massive construction gives the best possible sonority to the windup music box movement.

(3) The barrel, made of a special alloy, is brushed, then gold-plated. It hides the mechanism of the winder which is located under the box.

(4) The gold-plated brass roll comprises 60 to 80 pins according to the tunes, which are arranged by the composer, the “transposer” in our jargon.

(5) The regulator is made of gold-plated* brass. It ensures a good rhythm to the melody.

The case

The brass case is manufactured by qualified specialists. Its finish requires 26 delicate operations (sanding, polish, lacquer, sandpaper, gilding, cooking…), which confer its precious character to this music box.

Four coatings of lacquer are poured into this furrow (6). Four cookings and several polishes - a total of 17 manual operations - are necessary to produce this high-quality item. Finally, the ring will be covered with a gold coating.
